Why Baby Billy is the Funniest Character on Television

Television has given us some truly legendary comedic characters.

Michael Scott. Lucille Bluth. Ron Swanson. George Constanaza.

But in recent years, one character has climbed into my personal Hall of Fame faster than anyone else.

Baby Billy Freeman.

From the moment he walks on the screen in The Righteous Gemstones, you know you're about to witness absolute chaos. He is selfish, opportunistic, dramatic, manipulative, strangely charismatic, and somehow still still lovable.

I laugh every single time he is on the screen.

Walton Goggins Gives One of the Greatest Comedy Performances Ever

The secret to Baby Bily isn't just the writing.

It's Walton Goggins.

He never plays the character as though he's in on the joke.

Baby Billy genuinely believes every ridiculous thing he says.

Every scam.

Every excuse.

Every over-the-top speech.

Every terrible business venture.

He delivers it all with complete sincerity and that's exactly why it works.

He is the Definition of Failing Upward

Most people learn rom mistakes.

Baby Billy simply creates a new scheme.

His confidence never takes a hit, even when everything around him is falling apart.

It's almost inspirational....if it weren't so incredibly irresponsible.

Every Conversation Becomes About Baby Billy

Someone else could be having the emotional moment of the episode.

Baby Billy walks in.

Thirty seconds later he's talking about himself, pitching another idea, or trying to convince everyone that he's somehow the victim.

It's impossible not to laugh.

Baby Billy's Confidence is Outrageous

One of my favorite things about him is that embarrassment doesn't seem to exist.

Most people would disappear after one public failure.

Baby Billy doubles down.

If one idea doesn't work, he'll invent another before you've finished criticizing the first one.

His confidence borders on delusion, and that's comedy gold.

He's Somehow Both a Villain and a Puppy

Logically, Baby Billy shouldn't be likable.

He lies.

He manipulates.

He disappears when things get difficult.

He usually has an ulterior motive.

And yet...the second he starts talking, i'm rooting for him again.

That's an incredible achievement by both the writers and Walton Goggins.

His Musical Moments are Unforgettable

One of the funniest recurring aspects of Baby Billy's character is his complete inability to let go of his glory days.

Whether he's performing, reminiscing, or trying to launch yet another entertainment venture, he carries himself like he's still the biggest star in the room.

That combination of washed up celebrity confidence and relentless optimism creates some of the funniest scenes in the entire series.

He Steals Every Scene

The cast of The Righteous Gemstones is stacked with talented comedians and actors.

Danny McBride is hilarious.

Edi Patterson is phenomenal.

Adam DeVine brings endless energy.

John Goodman anchors the entire show.

And somehow...Baby Billy still manages to steal scenes from all of them.

That's incredibly difficult to do in an ensemble comedy.

He's Surprisingly Humanb

For all of his ridiculous behavior, there are moments when you see the insecurity underneath.

He wants attention. He wants relevance. He wants people to remember him.

Those small glimpses of vulnerability keep him from becoming a one-note comic relief character.

He's absurd, but he still feels like a real person.

Final Thoughts

Comedy is subjective.

Everyone has different tastes.

But for me, Baby Billy is one of the funniest television characters ever created.

Every entrance feels like the beginning of another disaster. Every conversation could turn into a sales pitch. Every episode becomes better the moment he appears.

In a show already filled with outrageous personalities, Baby Billy somehow stands above them all.

That's why he'll always be one of my favorite characters on television-and one of the biggest reasons I can rewatch The Righteous Gemstones over and over again.
